Tar Traps are custom-fitted to each Proto Pipe Classic body pipe we make.
Because of this, we cannot guarantee that a replacement will have a perfect fit.

To help improve your chances, we offer Tar Traps in packs of two.

Fit Adjustments & Tips

If your new Tar Trap feels slightly too large or tight, you can carefully use fine sandpaper or a small file to gently shave down the sides until it fits comfortably. This is a delicate process and may take a bit of patience—slow and steady is best.

If your Tar Trap feels a bit small or slips in and out too easily, there are a couple of things you can try:

• A natural buildup of resin around the hole can sometimes help hold a smaller Trap in place.

• Alternatively, using a very hard, slender nail, you can very carefully tap a tiny dent into the side of the Trap. This creates a small raised “welt” that helps it stay seated. (This requires a steady hand and a little finesse.)

• You can repeat this on the opposite side if needed to improve the fit.

Why Fit Can Vary

• Our raw brass extrusion can naturally vary by up to 1/1000" in diameter, which—at this scale—can make a noticeable difference.

• The drill bits used to create Tar Trap holes can also vary slightly due to wear, usage, and manufacturer tolerances.

About Our Modern Machined Tar Traps

In the 1970s and 80s, Proto Pipes used a different Tar Trap style. Our current Tar Traps are precision-machined, giving the bottom of the pipe more surface area to capture buildup. The result is a pipe that can go longer between cleanings, with a more consistent and refined fit overall thanks to modern machining tolerances.

They’re a small upgrade—but one that makes a noticeable difference in everyday use.
